getGP Gippsland Education & Training for General Practice

The Australian General Practice Training Program is a world class program providing personalised, localised and innovative training in the specialty of general practice. Twenty-two regional training providers now provide this training across Australia. GPET (General Practice Education and Training) is the federally-funded national vocational training company whose purpose is to implement and monitor regionalised and sontestable GP training. It allocated funds and training quotas, and undertakes quality assurance within these regional training consortia.

Since its beginnings as a highly successful pilot project and model, Gippsland Education and Training for General Practice (getGP) has delivered Australian General Practice Training in the Gippsland region.

The Board of getGP is made up of representatives from each of the key stakeholders in the region: the three Divisions of General Practice, the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM), the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP), hospitals, the Rural Workforce Agency Victoria (RWAV) and Monash University School of Rural Health, together with representatives of GP supervisors, GP registrars and the community. The Board sets policy and direction for the Gippsland Training Program, which is implemented by operational and administrative staff under the guidance of the Chief Executive Officer, Dr Rod Wellard.

The GP training program offered by getGP is supported by a team of dedicated medical educators in collaboration with a network of experienced GP supervisors in teaching practices throughout Gippsland.  This helps to ensure that getGP meets the needs of Gippsland for highly trained GPs in the future.

Grand Ridge Plantations

Grand Ridge Plantations (GRP) was formed when Hancock Victorian Plantations (HVP) acquired Australian Paper Plantations in September 2001.

GRP’s core business is plantation development and wood supply in the Gippsland region of Victoria, as well as the sustainable management of forests. The forests also provide a range of community values including biodiversity water quality and carbon sequestration.

GRP manages approximately 130,000 hectares of land, including around 56,000 hectares of pine plantations and 24,000 hectares of eucalypt plantations. The remaining 50,000 hectares is predominantly native forest buffers, managed for conservation.

The business supplies around 1.5 million tonnes per year of sawlogs and pulpwood to a range of pine and eucalypt sawmills in Gippsland, as well as to Australian Paper’s Maryvale pulp mill for the production of paper.

Approximately 1.2 million tonnes of annual production are pine logs, of which about 50 per cent are sawlogs, typically for the production of structural timber for house frames. The remaining 0.3 million tonnes relates to plantation eucalypt, making GRP the largest plantation eucalypt sawlog and pulpwood producer in Australia.

GRP has achieved Forest Stewardship Certification (FSC) and are continuously improving our forest management practices and developing local forest management standards and procedures with the shires, which not only meet the standards set by the Victorian Code of Forest Practices but also consider special local factors.

GRP employs 40 people, with contractors carrying out the harvesting of pulpwood and sawlogs. GRP’s contractors employ approximately 300 people in plantation development, harvest and haul operations.
